Rock stacking is a practice that has been around since ancient times, with its origins almost impossible to pinpoint. But what we do know, is how people interact with it in the present day. Rock balancing serves different purposes for everyone, from a sport, hobby, or artform, to a meditation technique and more. The cognitive benefits and coordination practice it provides are unique, which makes carefully stacking rocks a rewarding pursuit in lots of different ways.
Competitive Rock Stacking
Balancing rocks recreationally and for sport has been growing in popularity in recent years. Now there are even tournaments and competitions that take place pitting stackers against each other to see who the best is. Each year people fly in from all over the world to the World Rock Stacking Championship. Although typically taking place in Llano Texas at the Earth Art Fest; recently in July 2024, it moved for the first time to coastal Scotland in Dunbar. At the festival each year there are various different rock stacking events. This year the events included a junior competition, a tallest stack contest, as well as an adult artistic solo competition. Many of the contestants attribute their success in the field to the mindset they bring to the tournament. Stressing the importance of treating the process like art, even in competition. That a clear head, steady hands, and connection between oneself and nature are what leads to success in rock balancing.
The Art of Rock Stacking
Artists from all over create rock stacks, often photographing them to share their artwork with the world. Like many other forms of art, rock balancing artists emphasizes the process when admiring the final product. Especially with an artform as fleeting as rock balancing, where a strong gust of wind can knock it over, the process is of particular importance. The impermanence of the piece is a feature rather than a defect, bringing the focus more on the meditative nature and mindset needed to approach building such an impressive tower.
One common thread among rock balancing artists is the way that they speak about the zen-like nature of the task at hand. They comment on the mindset required in order to be careful and mindful enough to keep building on top of such a precariously constructed tower. It serves as an active kind of meditation that requires the user to be completely present and aware. Balancing stones is an art both in the process, and the final product.
Ecological Implications
Another benefit often cited regarding rock balancing is that it fosters a stronger connection to nature. It allows whoever is stacking to feel closer with the earth. Being able to balance uneven rocks into such impressive towers requires feeling the gravity as it pulls down on each rock in specific places trying to bring the tower down, while simultaneously holding it up.
Unfortunately, this close connection with the world does come with a caveat, which is that in many cases it can be damaging to local ecosystems to stack and balance rocks. Finding and removing rocks from areas, especially around a stream, river, or coastal area can be detrimental to some of the wildlife that lives there. Many invertebrates, reptiles, and amphibians shelter under or near rocks. Removing rocks and setting them up elsewhere can displace these animals while also contributing to premature erosion in what are typically fragile ecosystems to begin with. Further, many national parks and hiking trails use cairns or other stone constructions to signify landmarks, locations, or directions. The prevalence of additional rock stacks in these areas can lead to serious confusion for visiting hikers which sometimes results in people getting lost. With these two things in mind, it’s no wonder so many national parks around the United States have outright banned rock stacking, labeling it as a form of vandalism.
